I love sports. Specifically I love soccer. In 2005, I co-founded a men’s soccer team in New York City called Gotham Argo. An over 30 men’s team was added the following year, and we’ve had the good luck of having some recognizable people on our roster, including actor Anthony LaPaglia and Ethan Zohn, winner of the first Survivor.
The Survivor champ lived up to the title, surviving cancer that he still deals with to this day. Ethan is also co-founder of a GREAT organization called Grassroot Soccer, a non-profit that “uses the power of soccer to educate, inspire, and mobilize communities to stop the spread of HIV“.
As part of his campaign for awareness of HIV education and the GrassrootSoccer vision, he has put together teams of athletes to run the NYC marathon for the past 3 years. This year, he’s doing it again and is offering spots on his team to run in the marathon.
He asked me to send his message out to 5 friends. Instead, I decided to post it here and on all of my channels. I hope you’ll consider joining the team, donating whatever you can and send it out to 5 of your friends (or sharing on your social media channels)!
Here is his email to me that he asked me to share:
“…for the past 3 years I’ve captained incredible athletes running with Team Grassroot Soccer in the ING NYC Marathon. Last year I ran the race with blind World Champ Triathlete, Aaron Sheidies. Every year I am blown away by the commitment of the Team Members to run 26.2 miles and raise funds to help save lives.
This year we are aiming to do even more by raising $300,000 to help fund comprehensive HIV and AIDS prevention: HIV education, AIDS testing, plus treatment and counseling for kids who test positive.
And we’re bringing these life saving programs to more youth by broadening our reach throughout Africa and beyond.
We still have spots open for anyone who is interested in making this our best Marathon Team yet! You get sweet Nike gear, team dinner, newsletter, NYC training runs with JackRabbit Sports, sponsor products and some other cool perks. The registration deadline is coming up on September 28th. If you’re not able to run this year, please consider helping us by forwarding this message along to 5 friends who you can cajole, guilt trip or bribe into running 26.2 with an awesome team.
